Individual Psychotherapy

It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure. —Joseph Campbell

Often we seek out therapy because we feel confused, ashamed, or powerless.  We may question our values and wonder if we’re doing it all wrong, or even wonder about our inherent goodness (despite how intelligent, friendly, attractive, or accomplished we have been told we are).  Don’t worry; this doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. What it could mean is that a different approach or perspective is called for.

I see clients of all varieties and backgrounds, but many people come to me to work on:

  • self-criticism, self-esteem, and healthy boundaries
  • coming to terms with past losses and wounds
  • defining masculinity/femininity for oneself, often due to lack of a healthy role model
  • issues related to disability
  • unpacking the effects of privilege in their lives; whether they have experienced discrimination and marginalization, and/or want to explore the ways in which they hold privilege in society

I provide a calm, nonjudgmental space where every part of you is allowed.  Clients often appreciate being able to share thoughts and feelings with me that they haven’t been able to anywhere else.  This in itself can be a relief, and helps loosen the shame that grips all of us to one degree or another.

I believe personal change happens with self-awareness, self-acceptance, and at least one highly supportive figure.  My role is to facilitate you moving closer to your goals, and realizing the potential within.  I will encourage, inquire, and offer different ways to see a situation.  I’m not here to fix you, but to help cultivate your own tendencies toward vitality and growth.

Therapy is a different kind of relationship.  The intention of each session is to improve your wellbeing.  This could include exploring significant relationships or interactions in your life, examining your experiences in childhood or other formative periods, or helping to identify your strengths and challenges with systems such as the Enneagram or Archetypal Astrology.  It can also include talking about how you feel about your therapy and therapist (this is highly encouraged!).

I offer reasonable rates for 50-minute sessions.  I may have sliding-scale spots available, so please inquire if you have need.
